Heartland Orthopedic Specialists welcomes Emily J.M. Monroe, M.D., and Aaron J. Balgaard, M.D.
Heartland Orthopedic Specialists has recently grown to include 11 orthopedic providers with the addition of fellowship-trained sports medicine specialist Dr. Emily Monroe and specialty-trained orthopedic surgeon Dr. Aaron Balgaard. Both providers are available to see patients at the practice’s Alexandria office, located at 111 17th Ave. E. Dr. Monroe also sees patients in Willmar at 2800 First St. S., Suite 220, and in Morris at 24 E. Seventh St. Patients can schedule an appointment by calling (800) 762-1177.
As a fellowship-trained sports medicine surgeon, Dr. Monroe specializes in treating sports-related injuries and fracture care. Her surgical expertise includes knee ligament reconstruction, arthroscopy, rotator cuff repair, shoulder stabilization and shoulder replacement. Specialty-trained orthopedic surgeon Dr. Aaron Balgaard also provides expert fracture care and sports medicine treatments, including rotator cuff repair and arthroscopy. Additionally, Dr. Balgaard offers hip and knee replacement.

Dr. Monroe is a graduate of the University of Louisville School of Medicine and completed her residency in orthopedic surgery at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University. She later underwent additional specialty training in sports medicine through a fellowship at the University of California San Francisco. Dr. Balgaard earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School. He then completed his orthopedic surgery residency at The University of Kansas School of Medicine.
