Mike Doyle, M.B.A., L.A.T., Inducted Into the Minnesota Athletic Trainers' Hall of Fame

Administrative Director at Heartland Orthopedic Specialists Mike Doyle, M.B.A., L.A.T., was inducted into the Minnesota Athletic Trainers’ Association (MATA) Hall of Fame on Friday, April 12, during the Honors and Awards Banquet at their Annual Meeting on April 12–13.

Induction into the MATA Hall of Fame is awarded to athletic trainers who have made significant contributions to the athletic training profession through their professionalism, leadership and service in the state of Minnesota.

“Mike is most deserving of the recognition for a career in service of athletic training. We started working together in 1994, and he is and was conscientious, smart and a knowledgeable athletic trainer who put the athlete first,” says fellowship-trained sports medicine specialist Dr. Jefferson Brand of Heartland Orthopedic Specialists. “With the support of our single specialty orthopedic group and his passion and zeal for improving the care of the area athlete, our sports medicine program has grown to 12 high schools, area associations, a Division III college and includes our PEAK Performance sports training program.”

As a two-time past Minnesota Athletic Trainers’ Association President, MATA Government Affairs Chair and current MATA Government Affairs member, Doyle has spent countless hours meeting with legislators, lobbyists, supporters and opposition to improve the language in the MATA practice act.  

“As far as I am aware, he pioneered the utilization of athletic trainers in the clinical setting in Minnesota, and now many health care systems in the state of Minnesota employ athletic trainers in similar roles,” says Brent B. Millikin, M.Ed., L.A.T., A.T.C., Manager of Sports Medicine, Podiatry & Orthopedic Services, Allina Health. “Mike's advocacy for the athletic trainer to practice at the top of their license has been phenomenal. He has been a strong contributor in advancing the athletic training profession by not only his words but also his actions.”

Doyle has also made a significant impact on the athletic training profession by his vision and implementation of the role of the athletic trainer in the clinical setting. He has been a strong advocate for the athletic trainer in this role. In addition, over the past several years, Doyle has participated in several lobbying efforts and Hit the Hill events in Washington, DC. He has been involved at both the national and district level in regard to committees, workgroups and conferences that promote the utilization of athletic trainers in the clinical setting as well as in the secondary school setting.
