Alexandria surgeon leads international symposium to guide new sports medicine doctors

Dr. Jefferson Brand of Heartland Orthopedic Specialists recently led the Young Sports Medicine Symposium at the Annual Meeting for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine to educate and advise young surgeons.

Sports medicine doctors must keep up with the numerous advances in diagnosis and treatment options, adhere to the nuances of federal regulations and continual insurance changes and manage a practice. Many of these necessary skills are not part of a medical school education.

“You learn so much in the four years of medical school, five years of orthopedic residency, and the year in fellowship, but that training prepares you from a clinical perspective. There is almost no training in regard to how to run and manage a successful practice,” says Dr. Brand.

Each of the last four years, Dr. Jefferson Brand of Heartland Orthopedic Specialists has participated and led the Young Sports Medicine Symposium at the Annual Meeting for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). This year’s symposium on July 12 brought together a number of medical practice experts and senior surgeons like Dr. Brand to educate and advise young surgeons.
