3,000th Robotic Joint Replacement Patient Enjoying New Knee After Fast Recovery

Our whole joint replacement care team is incredibly proud of our robotic and outpatient joint replacement program and the success of every one of our patients. This summer, our team served the 3,000th patient in the program, and that patient’s story reflects the amount of dedication and experience our team offers.

Lavern S., 67, of Alexandria, works in an office environment and loves to travel. She started experiencing significant knee pain in 2020 and was taking cortisone shots. She was able to get relief for several years, but eventually, the shots were no longer helping. That’s when she was recommended for joint replacement.

After getting scheduled for her joint replacement with Dr. Dennis Weigel, Lavern stuck to the program offered at Heartland Orthopedic Specialists, which included preoperative classes and exercises.

“So, I arrived to the hospital at 5:30 in the morning and everybody from start to finish, from the receptionist checking me in to them putting in my IV to everything, was top-notch,” Lavern said. “And I was walking out with a walker by 3:30 the same day, and my care ever since has been top-notch as well.”

Lavern went on to complete her daily exercises and she stayed positive. Her results have been excellent. She also followed the patient education closely, including our joint replacement patient guidebook.

“That book was so helpful because I always could look forward to: ‘Okay, you're supposed to be able to do this on week one and be able to do this on week two.’ And I was always trying to be ahead of that week.”

Today, Lavern says,” I'm walking a mile a day. I'm taking three flights of steps a day, and I'm going on the bike 15 minutes every day.”
